I’m back from a few days at my hunting camp
and back to fishing for a living. Fishing was a bit tough when I left. There was some severe weather in Key West while I was gone. We didn’t get any of it at the camp even though it’s only 180 miles away. Anyway, it didn’t improve the fishing much. We had a half day today and fishing was tough. we lost a could of fish, but only brought in this Kingfish. it was a decent fish and enough to feed everyone, but trolling has been very tough lately. It’s the time of year when we tend to switch from our “Winter” fishing to our “summer fishing. It hasn’t happened yet. Something will break soon.
There are some Sailfish
around, but it is much more effective to fish with live bait when trying to catch a sailfish. I’ve had mostly half day trips lately. There is not enough time to catch live bait on a half day. So we have been trolling. It’s back to fishing for whatever bites. We can catch Sailfish trolling, but when you give a sailfish a choice between a live bait or dead ballyhoo, it’s like the choice between a burger and Filet Mignon. Yea, I like burgers, but given the choice, I’ll take the filet every time!
Normally this time of year
there are lots of Bonitos around this time of year. So far they haven’t shown up. When they do, they provide great action. Bonitos are in the tuna family. They are not really good to eat. Too bloody, but the fight very hard for their size and most people are surprised they are not much bigger when we boat them. They can be a pain when we are looking for other fish. But they can be a godsend when nothing else is biting. Hopefully, they will be here soon
