The Wind was back out of the North Today,

so we were back to fishing on the South Side of Key West. Considered the Atlantic or Carribean as opposed to the Gulf Of Mexico. We’ve been fishing the Gulf Of Mexico for the last few days. But when the wind blows out of the North, the Gulf becomes rough. It wasn’t blowing hard, but enough to make it uncomfortable.

We didn’t have much time today.

Only a half day. If you are fishing the South side or in the Gulf, you have to try to get bites quickly on a half day.

First, we tried fishing in the deeper water.

We got out to about 300 ft deep, but not much was happening so we went up on the Reef looking for bites.

We got the usual Barracudas,

including a couple of nice ones. In addition, we got a couple of Yellow Jacks. Yellow Jacks used to be a well-kept secret among the fishing community. Most Jacks are not good eating, but the YellowJack is delicoious. It is comproable to Grouper. Firm white meat and not fishy tasting at all. It was one of the fish the crew used to take home back when we could sell any fish customers left to the boat. It is not a big marked fish, so it would not bring much money.

Yellow Jacks only get up to about 15 lbs on average. Being a member of the Jack family, it is also a great fighting fish. Certain times of the year, large schools will migrate up or down the reef. The old name for them was “passing Jacks”, because when they are migrating, they would usually pass up any baits thrown at them. Most likely they were spawning and had something else on their mind besides food.
