Beautiful day for fishing offshore

Today was one of those days in Key West fishing was so nice being out there, I (almost) felt guilty getting paid.

We had to go a long way to find fish

We put our lines in about 16 miles south of Key West. That’s about 750 ft of water and unusually deep for this time of year. We continued to troll south until we started finding large patches of Sargasso weed. Once we found the weed, we found the fish. By the time we turned around to work back to Key West, we were 23 miles south of the island and fishing in about 3,000 ft of water.

Dolphin caught offshore of Key West Florida on the Charter Boat Southbound

We ended up with a nice catch

of Dolphin, (Mahi) for this time of year. We threw some small ones back as we were looking for bigger fish. You could not have asked for a prettier day. Clear skies, gentle north wind, and low humidity. Seas were less than 6 inches. It was the kind of day where you don’t want to come home.

I know I will never make a million dollars

owning and operating my charter boat, but it is days like today that make it all worthwhile. You can’t buy it, you have to be here and go for it and get lucky to hit a day like this. I spent the last 2 days in the bilge fixing an exhaust leak. That’s the part of this job customers don’t see. It’s not just going out on the boat and fishing. Generally speaking, that’s the easy part and the fun part. The oil change, engine repair and general maintenance part of the job that kind of sucks. After being under the deck for the better part of 2 days, I really needed a day like this
