Last day at the hunting camp

and I had no luck hunting, but no complaints. I never claimed to be a great hunter and most people don’t argue with me. My wife calls it “going camping” instead of going hunting because of how often I don’t bring anything home. She says I’m going to feed my “pet” pigs when I tell I have to go up to fill the feeders. Rumor has it, that I’ve been nominated as P.E.T.A “Hunter of the Year”. It’ll be my second year in a row! If this keeps up, Green Peace will be putting out a poster with my picture on it. You can’t take this too serious, it will take all the fun out of it. Besides, I am not subsistence hunting. I tend to eat just fine even if I don’t kill a hog.

It was a beautiful weekend.

The temperature was cool, No rain and the bugs were not bad. I like this time of year when the weather is a little cooler. I know it will get real hot soon enough and at 60+ yrs of age, I’m not looking forward to it. The rains will come soon too! and with the rains, will come the mud and the bugs. I have a swamp buggy for driving around the property. It’s been so dry lately, I could easily access just about every part of the lease with my personal truck, a Nissan Frontier. There no mud anywhere, but that will change. I have 40-inch tractor tires on my buggy, and once it starts to rain, I will need them to get around. Even the buggy in 4 WD has some problems at times.

With the rain comes the mosquitos.

It’s been very nice this winter. It’s been so dry, the mosquitos have been a non-factor. But once it starts raining, they can be brutal. Head nets, Gloves Long sleeve shirts, and Thermacells are necessities, especially on morning hunts. When you walk into the stands in the morning, you have to bundle up to sit in the dark. If any skin is exposed, the mosquitos will find it. Once the sun starts to come up, the mosquitos tend to go away.

As I said,

I had no luck hunting, but no complaints. One of the other members of the lease, Don, did very well. Don is a much more experienced hunter than I am, and I freely admit, much better too. That’s ok, I’m still having fun. Anyway, Don shot two hogs. a sow about 180lbs and a big Bar Hog, about 280lbs.

We, not trophy hunting,

we are meat hunting, so we eat what we shoot. A sow is a female. The sows are better eating than the boars and 180 is a big one. A Bar Hog is a male that has been previously caught and had its testicles removed. Sounds grisly, doesn’t it? If you remove the testicles, the males lose their ability to produce male hormones. They lose the desire to fight, to reproduce and to be aggressive. They just want to eat and get fat and be happy. Bar Hogs are also excellent eating
