Heading back up to my hunting camp for a few days.

We’ve been Busy so every once in a while I like taking a break from fishing and spend a few days in the woods on the Mainland.

If you look back on the Catch of the Day

you’ll see other pictures from the Hunting camp. We are mostly Hog hunting this time of year, deer season starts in August down here.

Wild hogs are a lot of fun to hunt

and removing them is good for the environment. They are an invasive species. They arrived in North America when the Spaniards did, They were brought as a food source. Somewhere along the line, some escaped and they started to multiply. After a couple of hundred years running wild, they are in about half the state in the country. Most are in the South. There is no hunting season on wild hogs. As an invasive species, you can hunt them any time of year. Also, there is no bag limit, there is no size limit and there is no restriction on which gender you can take. That makes them a great “target species” for a weekend hunter such as myself.

I mostly bow hunt,

which is much more difficult. You have to get the hogs to come in close, usually within 30 yards, to have a good shot a taking them with a bow. The males have a “shield’ on their side from rubbing on trees. It makes the skin on their flanks thick and very tough. It will slow an arrow down and also keep blood from flowing out. That makes them tough to kill and hard to track. Usually, it’s a bit swampy at hunting camps in south Florida, and mine is no different. fortunately, we’ve been in a pretty dry spell for the last few months. The nice thing is it keeps the mosquito population down. The rainy season starts in June and I know it will get muddy again, but I’m enjoying the lack of water for now.
