Not the time of year you expect them
Catching Mahi In December
It is late in the year for there to be Mahi in our Key West waters. Usually, we catch the bulk of our Mahi here in Key West in the summer months. It normally starts in May and will run until September or the first cold front pushes this far south.
Some years, if the water stays warm, we can catch Mahi late in the year and I have even had great catches of Mahi in January or February. That being said, I would not recommend my customers schedule their fishing vacation in January or February if they want to catch or fish for Mahi, but I will gladly catch them if they want to bite.
36 Lb Wahoo
One fish that we do expect to see this time of year is the Wahoo. We do catch them all year round. I have caught Wahoo 20 miles offshore and I have caught them just outside the reef. They do like to hang around wrecks at times. Because of this, I usually recommend a full-day charter fishing trip for those customers who wish to fish for Wahoo.
The Wahoo is a very cool fish. One of my 1st mates’ favorite fish to catch. They are one of the fastest fishing in the ocean. They are beautiful fish, long and sleek, and have verticle blue stripes. Their teeth are small but incredibly sharp. Most mates fear the bite of a Wahoo more than that of a Shark. Wahoo is one of the favorite eating fish among my customers and most of the crews on the dock. Delicious firm white meat that is highly prized and great on the Grill.
