Fishing on the New Moon
This fall has been more like a “traditional” fall season………………in other words slow. Both business-wise and fishing-wise. The last few years, with all the COVID issues going on, Key West has been going gangbusters. We have been very busy up until now. For most of the 30+ years I have been in business, August and September were traditionally very quiet. Everyone has already taken their Summer vacation. The kids are back in school, (Florida schools start in August) and it’s too early for a Winter vacation. Also, it is the height of Hurricane season. This year is following that tradition.
I don’t mind it. I have already been to the boatyard and taken care of a few repair issues and annual TLC. I’ve gotten some projects at my house and my hunting camp, taken care of and The Southbound is ready to rock and Roll into the “Season”. We have been fishing a trip here and there, but not a lot. Unfortunately, offshore fishing has been on the slow side also. We had a couple of trips this past week and went deep looking for dolphin. There were not many around. We did catch a few Wahoo, but they were on the small side and we even released a couple because they were so small. We caught enough fish for my customers to have dinner and released a few other fish. Small wahoos, undersized dolphin, and some barracudas, but definitely not a crush.
Usually, sometime in September, we get a late-season “Push” of fish coming through. I’m hoping we see that in the coming weeks. We will be fishing on the backside of the New Moon this coming week. That can be very good for the Wahoo fishing. Considering we caught 3 in 2 trips, (and I think we lost a big one), I’m hoping we can get a few more on this weeks trips.
