Big BullDolphin caught in Key West fishing on charter boat Southbound

Big dolphin in the deep blue

It’s been a great week of fishing. Now to most people, any week you get to go fishing every day would be a great week no matter what you are catching. When it’s your job, it’s a little bit different. I still think my job is fun. I still enjoy the people I have on board the Southbound. But it can be tough to head out every Morning when the fishing is slow. Not this week, This week we have had big dolphin in the deep blue water offshore. It doesn’t get any better for me

It has been “sporty” in the blue water. Seas have been at least 3-4 ft and some times as much as 6-8. It is pushing the limit of what most people can handle and both my 1st mate and I have been sleeping well every night. This is the fishing I look forward to every year. I don’t care how rough it gets. I love chasing down big dolphin in the deep blue waters of the Gulf Stream. The water is so blue, it makes me smile just looking at it. The color is amazing.

Most of the fish we are catching are under birds. The birds follow the fish hoping to pick up scraps when they feed. There is some sargasso weed formed up into small lines. Not the massive amounts of weed we were seeing a few weeks ago. If you find birds “working” on the weed, it’s almost a sure thing, you are going to get a bite.

Our biggest fish today was hanging around a floating shrimp basked with a couple of big Turtles. They were doing …..well, doing what turtles do when love is in the water. The fish was a 27lb Bull dolphin. It put up a great fight, screaming line off the reel and lots of fantastic jumps. In the end, it was no match for my angler as she did a great job fighting it, especially in the big waves.

20 lb Bull dolphin in Key West

We ended up with another nice bull dolphin in the 20lb range and one in the teens. Maybe 15lbs. We finished the day with a large Skip Jack Tuna, which was on the anglers “Bucket List”.
