40 lb Cobia caught on Charter Boat Southbound in Key West, Florida

Cold Front didn’t stop the good fishing

We had a cold front come through today, but that didn’t stop the good fishing!

Down here, a cold front means a chilly, strong wind out of the north. Now because the lower Florida Keys curve to the West, (Hence the name “Key West“). That means we can fish on the south side of the islands and get some protection from the wind. The further out you go the less protection you get. Today we decided to tuck in tight to the south side of the Islands and bottom fish. I’ve had some very good days doing this and today was no exception.

There are a number of large shoals and rock piles on the South Side. some are literally as big as a house and they can hold some good fish. We were not fishing long when we hooked a beautiful 40lb cobia. They are also known as “Ling” in other parts of the world. Cobia are strange fish. They have a face like a Catfish and they swim like a shark. They don’t have any teeth, but if they get loose on deck they can beat your ass with their tail. They are excellent eating. Firm, white meat. The size doesn’t really affect the taste. The big ones are as good to eat as the small ones.         https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cobia

Before the day was over, we picked up a second Cobia. This one was smaller than the first. It was only about 16 lbs, but still a nice fish. We also caught some nice Cero and Spanish mackerel and s few bottom fish, snappers and Grunts. Pretty good fishing for a cold blustery day
