The offshore has still been a little show
and we caught a lot of bottom fish yesterday. So we decided to continue with inshore fishing on some of the wrecks today. We were looking for some bigger fish. We got some live bait and started dropping on some wrecks.
Sometimes the offshore fishing can get slow.
When this happens it’s not uncommon for many of the boats to turn to the inshore fishing on some of the wrecks to keep the customers happy. Unfortunately, when this happens, the wrecks can get hit pretty hard. I knew the wrecks closest to Key West would be the ones that have seen the most pressure. Because of that, I started to the west hoping that some of the wrecks further away would have had fewer anglers visiting them. That seemed to be the case today. We hit a couple of wrecks without much success. But when I got further west, we started to get some bites. It was not a “red hot” action, but we got a couple of good fish to pull on the line and got some great eating Mutton Snapper for dinner.
We did catch a “keeper” dolphin
while fishing one of the wrecks. When conditions allow, I like to put a bait out on the surface while drifting the wrecks. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve caught a “bonus” fish doing this. Today it was a keeper Dolphin. Even though we weren’t dolphin fishing, but we are not prejudiced. So Mr. Mahi-Mahi was welcome to join the other fish in the fish box.

We had a couple of good fish in the box
for dinner so we decided to spend some time on the reef just looking for bites on spinning gear. I ran to a shallow reef west of Key West and we started trolling around looking for bites. The water is getting pretty warm this time of year, so I was worried they might not be there, but the action turned out to be pretty good. Not a lot of “monster ‘cudas” but some fun fishing and that is what we’re looking for.
We only brought in a couple of fish
for dinner, but that’s ok as we were mainly looking for action and we got it.
