38lb Wahoo caugth on the Southbound in Key West, Florida

Two Trips Today

The Southbound had two trips today

We had a 4 hr trip in the morning. We spent the time on the Reef. The fishing was pretty easy yesterday and my customers were more interested in Action and taking a few fish back for dinner than one of two big fish offshore. It was probably a good plan as it was a bit windy today and it was calmer on the reef. Also, when your wives let you go fishing on vacation and you bring back a delicious fish dinner, they will generally let you go again.

We ended up with a basket of nice Yellowtail Snapper and a couple of Cero Mackerel on the morning trip. We did have a “Hell of a” on the deep line. Probably a nice grouper, but once again, it got to the rocks before we could stop it and we never saw the fish.

In the afternoon

My customers opted for the opposite of the morning group. They were not looking for fish to eat, maybe enough for one meal. Instead, they were hoping for a nice Dolphin or Tuna. I did explain to them that it would be a bit choppy as the wind was still blowing and also that October is not a great time of year for Dolphin. It is not a bad time of year for Balck FinTuan, but there had not been many around lately. They understood but wanted to give it a try anyway. I talked them into a quick stop on the reef to catch a few Yellowtail snappers. I wanted to make sure they had at least enough for dinner that night.

We caught half a dozen yellowtails in short order and headed offshore to take our chances. This was a 6 hr trip and all in all we trolled offshore for about 31/2 hours of the 4 hrs we fished. We only got one bite in all that time……but it was a good one. The deep troll went off in about 360 ft of water and the line screamed off the reel. We knew it was a big fish right away. My customer did a very nice job fighting the fish, especially in relatively rough seas. In the end, we boated a 38lb Wahoo. That Bette than a Dolphin or Black Fin Tuna. It was a long day. I got to the boat at 6:30 in the morning and didn’t get home until about 7 pm. But we had two good trips and send everyone home happy. That works for me
